Roy Orbison
Roy Kelton Orbion (April 23, 1936 -December 1988), was born in Vernon, in north Texas. Roy Orbison achieved his first commercial success in June 1956 with “Ooby Dooby”, written by Orbison’s friends from college. In 1957 Roy Orbison first record, “Uptown”, was moderately successful. Moving to the Nashville-based Monument label in 1960 saw Roy immediate rise to the top of the charts with “Only the Lonely” (#2 in the US, #1 in the UK). More number 1 hits for Roy Orbison that came later were “Running Scared” and “Oh Pretty Woman”. Roy’s five-year rum on Monument records netted nineteen Top Forty hits, nine of which made the Top Ten. Among them were “Dream Baby,” “In Dreams,” “Blue Angel,” “Crying,” and “It’s Over”.
Roy Orbison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In 1988, he joined the Traveling Wilburys, which included Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne. A major comeback album, Mystery Girl, had been recorded and was awaiting release when Roy suffered a fatal heart attack in 1988. The well-received Mystery Girl went on to become the highest-charting solo album of his career, reaching #5 and launching the Top Ten hit “You Got It.”In the flood of tributes that followed, Tom Waits perhaps stated it best: “When you were trying to make a girl fall in love with you, it took roses, the ferris wheel and Roy Orbison.”
